1.Sacred heart cathedral church



Sacred Heart Cathedral is one of the oldest churches in the city with the house of the Bishop. The foundation of the church was laid in 1849 by Father Cori at Father Caros’ wish and the work was carried forward by Father Piccinelli and later Brother Lamoth who completed the work in 1864. The church was renovated several times. The tabernacle of the church is placed as a pearl inside a shell to depict that Jesus is the pearl of the land.

2.Sankara Rameshwarar Temple




The Sankara Rameshwarar Temple is located close to the old bus stop of the city. Legends say that Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati stopped near the Vancha Pushkarani tank while they were travelling to Thiruchendur. While they rested here the Lord explained to Goddess Parvati the great secrets of Pranava Manthra. This gave the place its name Thirumanthira Nagar which later came to be known as Thoothukudi. The temple has been built at the spot where the Gods rested.

3.Nehru park



The Nehru Park is located on the north of the city. It is on the beach road and was previously maintained by “coats India”. The park has now been taken over by the Municipality. Nehru Park at Thoothukudi is also known as Rajaji Park. The park is also famous among the locals as Water Tank as the park houses a big water storage.

4.Our Lady Of Snows Church



Our Lady Of Snows Church is also known as the Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Snow. The place is said to have been graced by the visit of Saint Francis in 1542. Later a church was constructed on the cliff in 1711 by the Portuguese and it was opened in 1713. The church was constructed in dedication to Mother Mary. The church houses a statue of Our Lady which was bought to Thoothukudi by the ship “Santalena” in 1555. In the year 1982, the shrine was raised to the statue of Basilica. This place is thronged by pilgrims every year during the annual celebration on 5th August.

5.Panchalankurichi




Panchalankurichi is an attraction with historical significance. Located at a distance of 34 km from Thoothukudi, the place is the birthplace of Veerapandiya Kattabomman, a 17th century freedom fighter who fought against the British. The Kattabomman Memorial Fort dedicated to him was also built here by the Government in 1947 which is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.

6.Harbour beach



The Harbour Beach is located close to the Harbour Guest House. There is also a park near it where people can stroll in the evenings amidst the refreshing sea breeze. The park is a popular tourist spot today.
