The Papanasam dam also known as Karaiyar Dam is located 49 kilometres (30 mi) away from Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, India. The dam is used to irrigate 86,107 acres (34,846 ha) of paddy fields in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts.
3.Papanasam Hydroelectric Power Plant
Papanasam Hydroelectric Power Plant was a design capacity of 28 MW. It has four Francis turbine-generators. The first unit was commissioned in 1944 and the last in 1951. It is on Thambirabarani river.It is operated by Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO).
4.Karayar dam
Karaiyar Dam or Tambraparani dam is located at about 20 Kms from the Town of Papanasam in Thirunelveli district of Tamilnadu. This is a beautiful picnic spot. The dam is inside the Kalakkad – Mundamthurai Tiger reserve. But spotting tigers is very remote as many vehicles ply in this route including State Transport buses every day. Papanasam Upper Dam is one of the biggest Dams in Tamilnadu.
