1.Sacred heart cathedral church



Sacred Heart Cathedral is one of the oldest churches in the city with the house of the Bishop. The foundation of the church was laid in 1849 by Father Cori at Father Caros’ wish and the work was carried forward by Father Piccinelli and later Brother Lamoth who completed the work in 1864. The church was renovated several times. The tabernacle of the church is placed as a pearl inside a shell to depict that Jesus is the pearl of the land.

2.Sankara Rameshwarar Temple




The Sankara Rameshwarar Temple is located close to the old bus stop of the city. Legends say that Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati stopped near the Vancha Pushkarani tank while they were travelling to Thiruchendur. While they rested here the Lord explained to Goddess Parvati the great secrets of Pranava Manthra. This gave the place its name Thirumanthira Nagar which later came to be known as Thoothukudi. The temple has been built at the spot where the Gods rested.

3.Nehru park



The Nehru Park is located on the north of the city. It is on the beach road and was previously maintained by “coats India”. The park has now been taken over by the Municipality. Nehru Park at Thoothukudi is also known as Rajaji Park. The park is also famous among the locals as Water Tank as the park houses a big water storage.

4.Our Lady Of Snows Church



Our Lady Of Snows Church is also known as the Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Snow. The place is said to have been graced by the visit of Saint Francis in 1542. Later a church was constructed on the cliff in 1711 by the Portuguese and it was opened in 1713. The church was constructed in dedication to Mother Mary. The church houses a statue of Our Lady which was bought to Thoothukudi by the ship “Santalena” in 1555. In the year 1982, the shrine was raised to the statue of Basilica. This place is thronged by pilgrims every year during the annual celebration on 5th August.

5.Panchalankurichi




Panchalankurichi is an attraction with historical significance. Located at a distance of 34 km from Thoothukudi, the place is the birthplace of Veerapandiya Kattabomman, a 17th century freedom fighter who fought against the British. The Kattabomman Memorial Fort dedicated to him was also built here by the Government in 1947 which is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.

6.Harbour beach



The Harbour Beach is located close to the Harbour Guest House. There is also a park near it where people can stroll in the evenings amidst the refreshing sea breeze. The park is a popular tourist spot today.

Karaiyar Dam or Tambraparani dam is located at about 20 Kms from the Town of Papanasam in Thirunelveli district of Tamilnadu. This is a beautiful picnic spot. The dam is inside the Kalakkad – Mundamthurai Tiger reserve. Sri Vaikundam Temple is located 29 Kms from Tirunelveli towards Tiruchendur. Many years back, a cowherd in the Pandya kingdom witnessed a strange event on the land where this temple is situated. The King was informed who ordered an excavation. The Lord's shrine was discovered and it is around this spot that the sanctum has been built. The present day Gopuram was built by Chanthirakula Pandiyan. The vedic practice is Pancharathram and Tradition followed is Thenkalai. The Urchavar sculpture should be observed carefully. The Lord has a pinch mark in his cheek! The legend is that the sculptor broke the mould while working on the sculpture. As his heart leaped the Lord got a pinch mark Remarkable murals are depicted in the corridors of the temple. The subject matter are the 108 Divya desam shrines Time : 7 am - 12 pm, 5 - 8 pm

2.Thiruvaragunamangai temple, Vijayaasana Perumal Temple, Natham.


Thiruvaragunamangai temple is located 3 KMs east of Sri Vaikundam. The Maha Sambrokshanam was performed on 20th june in 1996. The lord is in a sitting posture. The vedic practice is Vaigasanam and tradition is Thenkalai. The gopuram is very majestic and has 9 tiers.  Recently a spring was discovered around the temple which has been renovated now.
Time : 8 am - 12 pm, 1 - 6 pm .

3.Thirupulinkudi, ThiruPulingudi Perumal Temple


Thirupulinkudi Temple is just half a KM towards east of Thiruvaragunamangai temple. The mahasamrokshnam was performed on 15th may in 1996. The deity is also called Boomibalagar.  Once upon a time Boomidevi the Earth Goddess got upset with the Lord. The Earth became barren. The lord went and pacified her by telling her she enjoys equal status with Lakshmi It is said that childless couples will be blessed with children upon praying here. The vedic practice is Vaikaasanam and tradition followed is Thenkalai

4.Thirukulanthai, Srinivasa Perumal Temple,



Thirukulanthai Temple is located 5 KMs towards East of Thirupuliyankudi. Mahasambrokshanam was performed on 9th December in 1998. Legend has it that many years ago, The Lord had married a girl called Kamalavathy, daughter of Vedhasaran and Kumuthavalli. One day a demon named Achmasaran abducted Kumuthavalli while she was having a bath and hid her in the Himalayas. The Lord mounted Garuda and went to the Himalayas and rescued the lady. Unique feature about Thirukulanthai Temple Since the Lord went to Himalayas mounted on Garuda, it is Garuda who is the processional deity in this temple The vedic practice adopted in this divya desam temple is Vaigasanam while the  tradition followed is Thenkalai.

5.North & South Temple of Errattai Tirupathi,, Aravindalochanar temple, Tholavillimangalam




The Erratai Tirupathi temples can be reached from Thirukulanthai temple via Mangalakurich. The shrines are in a forest along a channel called Vadakaal.  The vedic practice is Vaikaasanam and tradition followed is Thenkalai. The puranic lore around South Temple is that a rishi called Athreyasubrabar selected this area for his Yagna. While cleaning the spot, he found a bow and a balance. As soon as he touched them the bow and balance became a man and a woman. They had been cursed into that existence by Kuber. Henceforth the place became known as Thoolaivillimangalam The highlight of North Temple is that Nammalvar has performed mangaalasasanam for the Thayar at this temple with the Lord. Time : 8 am - 1 pm, 2 - 6 pm

6.Thenthiruperi, Makara Nedunkuzhai Kannan Temple




Thenthiruperi temple is located 35 KMs away from Tirunelveli on the Tirunelveli- Triuchendur road, besides the southern banks of Thamirabharani river. The mahasamprokshanam as performed on 16th June in 1999.  The original temple is very ancient, predating even Nammalvar. During the 10th century the temple got some additions in the form of a mast, hall and temple car. King Sundara Pandiyan had brought 108 Jaimuni Samaveda Thalavakara from Cholas to perform a prayer in this temple. He was blessed with a child soon afterwards. The Vedic practice followed here is Pancharaathiram while the tradition is Thenkalai. Time : 7 am - 12 pm, 5 - 8:30 pm

7.Thirukolur, Vaithamanidhi Perumal Temple




Thirukolur is located 5 kms away from Thenthiruperi on the way towards Alwarthirunagari. This is the birth place of Madhurakavi Alvar. There is a legend that a descendant Of Vyasa called Dharmaguptan had lost all his wealth. He was advised by Bharadwaja Muni to come to this temple and perform prayers. The Lord was pleased with his devotion and wealth returned to him. It is said that anyone who has lost wealth can come here and pray with devotion. The Lord always returns the wealth of those who pray with devotion. The Vedic practice followed here is Vaikaasanam while the tradition is Thenkalai. Time : 7:30 am - 12 pm, 1 - 8 pm

8.Thirugurukoor, AlwarThirunagari Temple




Thirugurukoor is located in the famous village of Alwarthitunagari. Tamarind tree is the Sthala vritcham here Nammalvar was born to the royal couple Kaarimaaran and Vudaiya Nangiayaar. He didnot speak for 16 years. The worried parents took the child to this temple and cradled it to the tamarind tree near the shrine. Nammalvar spoke only when Madhurakavi Alvar met him during his wanderings under the tamarind tree. This tamarind tree is 2000 years old and can still be seen at the temple. It is here at Alwarthirunagari that Nadamuni wrote Divyaprabhandam. Nadamuni sought the Kanni Nunsiruthaambu from descendents of Madhurakavi Alvars. Pleased with his dedication Nammalvar appeared before Nadamuni and helped him with the Divyaprabhandam. The presiding deity of Nammalvar was sculpted by Madurakavi Alvar by a special formulation of boiled water from the River Thamirabharani. Time : 6 am - 12 pm, 5 - 8:45 pm

The Thirumalai Nayak Palace was the residence of King Thirumalai Nayak and was approximately four times bigger than what is seen today. There are a total of 248 pillars in this grand palace. The main palace is divided into two sections, namely Swargavilasa and Rangavilasa. In these two parts, there are various sections of the royal residence, theatre, shrine, apartments, armoury, royal bandstand, pond and garden. The Gandhi Memorial Museum serves as a remembrance and tribute to the efforts of our very own father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Legends say that the idol of the temple too was obtained from the bottom of the tank, while it was dug in the olden times.So the tank gained its popularity since then and the temple too was constructed in its memory. 1.Pazhaya Courtalla Aruvi



The Pazhaya Courtalla Aruvi (Old Courtallam falls) used to fall into a valley from between two rocks. The valley was closed and the rocks were broken to change the course of water and make bathing easier. It was reopened later.

Peraruvi (main falls) the biggest falls in Courtallam, is about 60m high. The flow of water is interrupted by the Pongumakadal, a 19m deep crater and comes down with greatly reduced impact, making a bath safe.

4.Shenbagadevi falls

About 3 km from this is Thenaruvi (honey falls), 40m high and cascading between two large stones. In places where there is no water, one sees big honeycombs. Thenaruvi is very dangerous and it is restricted for public. But it is very common to see people visiting and bathing in Thenaruvi.

Located on the Mount Poonamalle road, the cemetery is just 5 kilometres from the airport and a kilometre away from Saint Thomas Mount. 4.Kovalam Beach



Located just 25 kilometres from the city, Kovalam beach is part of the Kovalam village located on the shores of Bay of Bengal, on the East Coast Road next to Muttukaadu Bridge. Also known as Covelong beach, it is a crescent-shaped beach and offers truly magnificent views. Do not confuse this beach with the Kovalam town in Kerala. 
You can try boating and wind surfing here. In fact, it is one of the rare places in India where wind surfing is possible. However in recent times, owing to extensive commercialisation, the sanity of the beach is affected.

5.Government Museum




Also known as Egmore or Madras Museum, the Government Museum was founded in 1851 and is touted to be India’s second oldest museum. Spread across 17 acres of land, the museum comprises of six buildings with 46 galleries. Some of them are believed to be approximately 100 years old. It houses a wide collection of Roman antiques, palm-leaf manuscripts, Amravati paintings, wood carvings and other historical articles.

6.Ripon Building




Built in the year 1913, the Ripon Building is the official seat of the Chennai Corporation and is painted white as a representation of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Situated close to the Chennai Railway Station, it was constructed by Loganatha Mudaliar and was named after Lord Ripon who was the then Governor General of British India.  This royal building is rectangular in shape with a 43 meters tower that has a 2.5 meter clock. Also known as Westminster Chiming Clock, this has been the main attraction of the building ever since it was built. It has a mechanical key system that is checked every day. 

7.Vadapalani Murugan Temple




Dedicated to Lord Muruga, Vadapalani Murugan Temple is almost 125 years old. It is quite popular in Chennai as many religious rites and marriage ceremonies are conducted here. Legend says that Annaswami Nayakar, an ardent devotee of Lord Muruga made a tiny thatched hut where he placed the image of the Lord. Whenever he used to pray, he used to say certain religious chants which worked as a healing therapy for ailing people and were considered auspicious in getting married and acquiring jobs.  After his death, a temple was constructed in place of the hut and since then the significance has been carried forward. 8.Anna Memorial




Located on Marina beach in Chennai, Anna Memorial was built in the honour of the great Dravidian leader Arinzar Annadurai as well as former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, C. N. Annadurai whose cremation was done here in 1969. The memorial is situated in the midst of a lush green park. 

As soon as you reach here, you will be welcomed by an arch that is shaped like an elephant tusk. Boasting of a huge area of 510 hectares, the memorial has a museum, safari park, aquarium and animal house.
